  • Wikipedia Article Evaluation

So far the current status of my article for this Wikipedia project includes the application of the training exercise that was on the dashboard. I completed the steps to add the bibliography onto the talk section of my article which is about the national Congress of Negro woman. I chose to do this article because it was a star class, and I also am connected to him because of my current membership in this organization. Since this article is a star class it gives me the opportunity to build on a lot of the things that the organization is about that Wikipedia lacks. This article definitely lacks a lot about the creation and expansion of the CW, the programs, duties, importance, the latest president and chair members, and some pictures. I’ve recognized that these parts of Wikipedia are lacking because they only have about three sentences under some of these categories or nothing at all regarding them. When I checked the talk section to see if anyone else is working on putting any more additions to this page or editing anything there was nobody there with intentions. The sections are really plan to focus on is the latest president and chair members and some of the programs and duties that they have done so far just because there’s a lot more information on what they do now compared to what they used to do before so maybe I can also incorporate more about the expansion that ties into this too. The kind of research that I plan to do is just looking online for different forms of media that can give me more information about the NCNW. I plan to look in some of the sources that were provided by the National Museum of African-American history and culture because they have a large collection of reliable sources that have to do with the expansion and creation of the NCNW. I will also be looking at YouTube videos to learn more about the late president and cheer members because they are what fuels some of the newest programs and duties that we do now which isn’t really expressed on Wikipedia.

  • WikiMIS

After having a conversation about Wikipedia earlier in class, it made me think about one of my classes I have now, which is called management information systems. Management information systems is a field that sits at the intersection of business technology and people, and is designed to collect, process and analyze data organization to improve decision-making and protect whatever is assigned to. I think that management information systems could help Wikipedia in the past and now by providing structured analytical tools, more organized data, and automated processes necessary to manage. It’s massively decentralized in volunteer driven operations. With MIS it can detect any vandalism and misinformation, it can operate efficiently and control the quality of data uploaded, and a construct of the data information to be unbiased by detecting any language or information that might have biased opinion. Overall, I thought this connection would be somewhat significant to point out since it’s something that connects from both of the classes I take!

  • My Previous Wikipedia Experience

Before exploring further with all the uses of Wikipedia now in this class beforehand, I used to look at Wikipedia as an untrusted source for information where people included any types of data that they want whether it be factual or not. Because of this, lots of my teachers from high school and even before that, I have suggested not to use this, as it can be a form of cheating or misuse of data and resources. Even siding, Wikipedia could take lots of points from essays because of its lack of credibility due to certain scandals or mistakes. I used to use Wikipedia as a source for basic information though just to use common sense types of knowledge. The things I would look for usually consisted of full name, date of birth, date of death if there is one, place of schooling, and possibly what the person, place or thing is known for. I thought Wikipedia to be a helpful source for small basic information that everyone would know compared to things that have to do with situational reporting or quoting. I used to refrain from doing any research or tracking any information from Wikipedia that had to do with talking about a situation and the timeline of what happened because I’ve heard that lots of these things can be wrong due to other edits added to Wikipedia but overall I find a Wikipedia can be helpful in certain ways, even though it might not be completely trusted as a whole and this reflects how I used Wikipedia before starting the project in this class pages.

  • Distant Reading Activity Pt.2

To complete the distant reading activity, I use the text linked below to analyze what is everyone’s general opinion on the divergent movie series. To do this I collected data from each of the following articles and used visualization tools to help me get a feel of what the general consensus of opinions on this movie series is. I focused in on the most recent reviews from rotten tomatoes, and Reddit, and then used all the information provided by the articles I’ve read. I decided to track the most recent opinions on the movie since the articles also came out closer to this year compared to the year that the movie had just premiered. After collecting all this information though I have made three observations from using WordCloud and Voyant visualization which are provided below. I have recognized that there are more positive opinions compared to negative opinions, the first divergent movie is most significant to all of the people considered the audience, and the reviews from rotten tomatoes, and Reddit were on the same page about how they believe the movie is bad or predictable, leaving a negative connotation from the wider audience. to observe the content of the text from a different point of view I looked up keywords and phrases on Voyants specifically. To see if there were more negative words or positive words found, more uses of the titles of each movie, and the general opinion on each document that has a different type of person from this very general audience. By doing this, I have learned the general opinion and view that the audience has on the divergent movie series without even having to read each and every review. The visualizations that were created for me showed me exactly what people thought specifically about the movies and it’s interesting to see how others view the movies I would consider my favorite.

  • Time for The Bride!

There’s a new movie coming out soon that is called The Bride! And it’s a Gothic horror film that’s directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal expressing the bride of Frankenstein‘s monster, set in 1930’s Chicago with a punk rock twist. After reading a bit of the Frankenstein story in class and breaking down some of the concepts that reveal different forms of character, emotion, and values I become very interested in seeing the movie when it comes out. In the most recent volume in chapters that we’ve read of Frankenstein, the idea of giving him a female companion is introduced in this movie is just about how their relationship is going to go. This movie is coming out March 6. By the time that comes around it will soon be the part of the story where they expressed more of how they suit each other and I’m very excited to see if the book matches up with this movie that has a creative twist on it. I’m really excited to read more of the book and see an enacted version of the things that we discussed in class.

  • Distant Reading Text Selection

For the distant reading project at first, I was thinking of doing a topic that went over stocks in the markets, but after thinking about it, I don’t know much about it in general to come up with an idea more specific about it, that will be a good theme for my project and future projects. So instead, I thought about some of my favorite movies and they’re all dystopian so I narrowed down to the one dystopian movie. I think I like Divergent the most, directed by Neil Burger and Robert Schwentke. Overall, I thought that the first divergent movie was the best and it made me think about how the entire series evolved. So I started to explore articles that were commented and reviewed on Reddit, which has many links that go to different points of views and opinions that people have all related to the single idea of all the divergent movies. All of the articles I have found so far are listed below and they sum up what I want my larger topic to be: What are the common and uncommon views and opinions on the evolution of the divergent movie series? Would this be my topic? These are the articles I think that will help support my idea the best:

  • My Data Project Update

In terms of my data project I’m working on two drafts that track my emotions and that track my cursing. I chose these because I had the intention of having more control over each of them in a healthier way. I personally am a person that is quick to react to things and that a lot of followers that aren’t necessary slip. In general, I want to stop cursing and this project just showed me where I’m most likely to curse at, which is with my friends. I tracked all this data on the worksheet, which was the easiest for me and I use my Notes app to track my curse words. I found this to be very helpful when trying to break down the specifics of how I felt in each hour and even who I was with as I cursed each of the three days. There wasn’t anything that was too difficult about tracking the data myself, but I didn’t realize that I had the connotation of trying to stop. So far from my results I’ve realized that I like to curse a lot when I’m very happy and around friends. I wasn’t surprised by these results, but I never realized how much I did curse even when I’ve been trying to stop cursing lately. I also found it a bit surprising how much I’m not angry, annoyed, sad or fearful of anything. The visuals I plan to use to express this information are with a popsicle stick fan with pom poms and buttons showing how the curse words just pop out. For my emotion data I tracked I am thinking of putting it on paper since it is a large amount of fluctuating data that has lots of different meanings. So far I have started the form of my popsicle fan. I haven’t put any pom poms or buttons or made a key yet though. I think everything will turn out great though with steady progress!

  • Track how I Act!

Today is day four out of the seven days of me tracking my emotions to figure out more data about myself. The purpose of me choosing to attract my emotions comes from connecting it to the other data. I’m collecting on myself, which is about how much I curse. I’m personally on a journey to becoming more spiritually aligned with my religion and with that certain things I do in certain ways I act don’t follow the Commandments of my religion. After tracking most of my emotions throughout this week, I recognized that when I wake up, I’m pretty calm and throughout the day I have certain spikes of happiness, especially after my dance class. Even though I complain about how tiring my dance class makes me once I get to class I can’t deny how happy dance makes me feel. Overall, I’ve also noticed around the times when I’m happiest or with my friends, I curse a lot more than usual and it’s very interesting to interpret these things when it comes to my everyday life because these are things I definitely haven’t thought of so deeply before. Overall, my progress is going smoothly and I really appreciate how much attention I pay myself now when it comes to how I act and speak towards people in better ways to support my purpose.

  • Hello I’m Jaidan!

Hi, my name is Jaidan. I am a sophomore at Rowan university with a marketing major. I work as the PR chair of the NCNW here on campus and I also work as the supervisor of aquatics at the rolling campus Rec Center along with doing mentorship for the Harley E.Flack program. I just recently picked up a job working with the organization, called ATAP foundation as their PR manager over winter break after networking with them. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, being creative, and listening to music. But overall, you are Rowan. I definitely have enjoyed myself and evolved as a person.

In this course, I want to learn and understand more about digital humanities as a whole and understand what my part is in digital humanities. So far throughout the course, I really enjoyed reading about Frankenstein and I also like how we have discussions that breakdown the topics that connect to digital humanities. Overall, I’m excited for the skills this class is going to provide me with
