  • Free Progress Blog

For this free block post, I would like to speak about how I feel about the creature on digital humanities project. Since the beginning, I knew I wanted to do nutritional facts and things I had to do with food to keep me more entertained and interested while doing the project. But as I continue to collect data and analyze it on a deeper level, it made me think about how intricate and tedious these types of works are, especially in a bigger format than the little one I just did. i’m pretty proud of how much I’ve gotten done on my website, but I also feel like my own research in application of data. Doesn’t really compare to the other examples that we’ve seen so far. Overall, I’m so busy with all the other work I have in other classes that I’m at the point where there’s not really enough time to add as much as I want.

  • Reflection of Data Veiws

After working further on organizing the data I’m using for my big Mac breakdown project. I have collected the data in a way that diversely appeases wider audiences. I adjusted my views of the data in ways that express the general text information and timeline of how my data should be seen with two pages. To make my organization the most beneficial to any reader and the most appealing, I put the important part which is the timeline on the front page and I plan on adding pictures along the way to express the major nutrition fact or key point that differentiates the specific burger from that time from the others. My favorite weight of view data is in picture form with graphs, but I understand how that may be hard for some people to understand or comprehend if not put into all text. The sorting I used previously on a spreadsheet was very organized and easy to understand in my opinion, and I feel like it would go well put into better form on my website. I feel like the users will mainly need an explanation of the meaning of nutrition facts and what some of the terms may mean just because it’s not completely common knowledge, but it is something that is seen very often. As I continue working on this, I can see that my project should come together to be very accessible and unique in design.

  • Free Topic 6

For this free topic blog, I would like to discuss my reaction to the work that we annotated about how people with disabilities use the web. This is a topic that I wouldn’t question or be familiar with unless it was put in front of me with some sort of purpose for understanding. I feel like throughout all of digital humanities, I interact with I find the similar theme that there’s always a question or purpose to something that I learn or explore and go more into depth of that I wouldn’t usually question on my own without any incentive even with it being interesting in general. I find this to be one of the very interesting facts about digital humanities that I would have never expected when taking this class.

  • Cleaned Data Reflection

To reflect on after cleaning my data, I clean the data of nutrition facts on one of McDonald’s most popular burgers called the big Mac. This data was quantitative and I collected it from articles online and the McDonald’s website. It has been pretty easy to clean the data because there wasn’t much to remove, but it was very tedious to put each number in one by one. I found it a bit hard to find certain data on things before 2005 just because a lot of the data had not been uploaded around that time. A lot of my sources I used for the data before that time came from old pictures that were resourced on Reddit. Cleaning the data in general feels kind of tedious when trying to find what you need and then picking and choosing what should go and what you’re not. But overall, it feels good to make a collection of this to get across a point. I can’t say one of my mistakes I’ve noticed is that my information is not completely credible just because I rely on old McDonald’s nutrition newspapers to fill in the nutrition facts of the burger from that time. The trend I predicted did not match the one that ended up being true. The Big Mac used to be very unhealthy when the super sized area came in the 1980s but then it reduced back down to a bit healthier, and then became even more unhealthy to its unhealthiest point today. Along with information about the big Mac, I added information about the big arch as well which is known to be the burger that is double with the big Mac already is. These observations that I may definitely use can be incorporated into the work. I wanna create with my data and it will definitely help out with the visualization of it altogether.

  • Free Blog 5 Progression

For this free topic blog post I want to talk about how I’ve been feeling about my personal growth throughout this semester. Within this class, I’ve definitely explored a topic that I have never interacted with before and it definitely has challenged my process of dealing with certain types of information and data. Over time I feel like most of my progress has mainly thrived after being able to include my own interest and creativity within projects. I really appreciate the space this class gives me to be creative when there isn’t as many opportunities for it in my other classes or free time anymore.

  • Data Collection

So far through the process of my McDonald’s digital humanities project I’ve collected data on a specific McDonald’s burger that has been around since 1967 which is now known as the Big Mac. I decided to simplify my search just because McDonald’s has such a wide range of hamburgers and cheeseburgers that it would be hard to collect all the data about their evolution compared to just one item throughout a singular timeline. So far I’ve used an Excel sheet to express the type of burger and year and then go over all of its nutritional facts provided by PDF document and the McDonald’s website. So far the process has been pretty enjoyable because it’s funny and interesting to learn more about these very popular foods, but it also has been a bit tedious information through the Excel sheets when it’s not as simple as just copy and paste it and you have to type it all in. I don’t really know if ChatGPT can help me gather this information correctly just because some of the PDF source material doesn’t match the nutritional fact information ChatGPT provided me with. So far my point about how the burgers are getting unhealthier overtime is being proved but so far I only have three dates collected which is 2015, 2020, and 2026. I have collected three burgers out of my goal of 10 so I would say I’m about 30% done with my main collection of information. I also plan to gather the American obesity percentage rates during the same years, which won’t take too long either. to complete my production plan is to get all of the burger nutritional facts completed before next Monday and have the American obesity rate collected on Monday. I finished by treating it like homework and making sure that all of my information is organized neatly incorrectly to be further visualized for the project. I understand that this is the base to everything so I need to make sure I put in a good amount of detail analysis and overall general data.

  • CYO DH Project Pre-Plan

For this digital humanities project where we get to create our own ideas and formats of how we will deal with information based on the things we learn I’ve decided to do the topic on something that has more recently become intriguing to me. I want to do a topic on the evolution of the food that we consume and I specifically want to get into McDonald’s because as a marketing student, I feel as though they are one of the most successful companies that are known to have bad products but amazing success rate. Because of this I want to get deeper into the product that they have and break down how their products have evolved over time and show people what that looks like with transparent facts. The problem that this solves is the fact that people don’t know much about these companies that almost everyone is a consumer of. With my knowledge about marketing standpoint and health and wellness within nutrition I feel like I’m the right person to break down how all the burgers overtime at McDonald’s have been becoming more unhealthy. To do this I want to make a mix of a data visualization and timeline that shows the decline in healthiness of the classic McDonald’s, hamburgers, and cheeseburgers that billions of people had. I think people should know about this because a lot of things like nutrition, labels and facts are easily passed by when consuming things that just taste good to us or intrigue our desires. I feel like this project will be successful because I can easily find information about nutrition facts through their website and there have been multiple standpoints from a lot of different people on the unhealthiness of McDonald’s specifically.

  • DH Project IDEA

I’m thinking of doing a topic based on McDonald’s from a marketing standpoint. I chose this because I’m very interested in how businesses and companies become successful through different types of marketing. At first, I thought of doing a project on how McDonald’s became so successful by reaching multiple points about where they were placed, how they marketed their logo, etc. I finally came to the conclusion I want to go over the evolution of McDonald’s burgers and how they get unhealthier over time. I would like to learn the details about the nutritional facts that come with it and I think that others should be aware of some of the most popular fast food nutritional value as time goes on. Digital resources like scholarly articles in the McDonald’s website will definitely help me be able to understand the accessible knowledge I would need. I’m really excited to visualize this project

  • Finishing Wiki Article

Because I missed class on Monday, 3/23 I wasn’t able to completely follow along with the instructions of completing our Wikipedia articles, but I did my best to finish making my edits which consisted of one date change, two number amount, edits, and one entire paragraph about the expansion of the NCNW. I would say that my article is about 80% complete. I would like to wait for a bit of reassurance before I continue writing just to make sure I’m doing everything correctly even after missing class. I feel like I’ve done a good job summoning up a lot of the information I looked into and I would say there’s still room for me to add more. I just wanna make sure that I am not being repetitive from some of the information placed in different parts of the article which I haven’t seen before. After doing this, this has taught me a lot more about the history of one of the organizations I am currently in and it made me realize that when you don’t keep up with the details and purpose of your mission, it goes unknown to anyone else even if it applies to them. So doing this definitely opens my eyes to how digital humanities is such a blessing to others when intrigued by more knowledge. This entire project has made me a lot more intrigued about my knowledge as well. I’ve learned that Wikipedia is a source that is edited by many people and also regulated by lots of people as well with time stamps and very organized, detailed structure to make sure that things go smoothly which I wasn’t aware about. I think that Wikipedia is a pretty reliable source if you look at it the correct way doing this project has made me realize I’ve been looking at Wikipedia with my glasses off for all my life and doing this really cleared things up for me!

  • NCNW Free Blog

After learning more about Wikipedia and its significance in lots of communities, it’s made me realize that this source of information can help people in ways. I would’ve never predicted. My article will help provide others with more information on the importance and expansion of an organization I hold dearly to myself. I think this will help others to understand what kind of organization we are and what kind of things we do that deserve recognition and credit. I want to do my part by adding more information to our Wikipedia article for my own personal chapter of NCNW sisters, and the plethora of chapters around the world as well!
